Taiwanese businesspeople assist flood-hit compatriots in Thailand

Bangkok, Nov. 6 (CNA) A group of Taiwanese business owners have been providing volunteer aid to Taiwanese enterprises and expatriates in central Thailand who were affected by the country's worst flooding in more than 50 years. The group, accompanied by Thailand's military, set off from Sam Phran, the southernmost district of Nakhon Pathom Province, heading for Thon Buri outside Bangkok where over 300 Taiwanese businesses are located. Carrying sandbags and pumps, the group has been traveling back and forth over the past few days between the two areas, which are about an hour's drive apart, to help flood victims. The volunteer group, led by Kuo Hsiu-min, a Thailand-based businesswoman and an adviser for Taiwan 's Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission, has made more than 27,000 sandbags since October to help Taiwanese businesses and local residents there. According Kuo, more than 30 percent of Taiwanese businesses in the region have reported damage. "I felt so bad to see those Taiwanese factories under floodwaters that I wanted to do something for the owners," Kuo said. She said the group saw a lot of abandoned factories along the Thon Buri route and some Thai businesses there were still struggling with the flooding. Tsai Hsuan-yuan, a Taiwanese businessman whose cleaning tool factories were under water for four days before the group arrived, was pleased after they helped pump out the water. "The water came in very fast, even though we had prepared sandbags and had pumps, said Tsai, who remained optimistic about the outlook for his business. The flooding in Thailand has spread to Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi provinces, as well as areas of east, west and north of Bangkok. Many businesses are struggling to cope with the historic floods, Thailand's worst since 1942, as no one knows when the waters will abate. (By Namita Lin and Hanna Liu)
