Indigenous dignitaries meet with government officials in Taipei

Taipei, Nov. 6 (CNA) Some 200 tribal chiefs and indigenous elders representing the 14 aboriginal tribes in Taiwan gathered in Taipei Sunday for a meeting with government officials in a bid to improve mutual understanding. The Cabinet-level Council of Indigenous People (CIP) and the indigenous dignitaries exchanged views on tribal autonomy, the protection of indigenous identity and promotion of tribal tourism. The CIP said the event was aimed at hearing the voices of the aboriginal people and helping the government plan its future policies concerning the indigenous tribes. The event also gave officials a chance to promote government policies to the aboriginal tribes and allowed the tribes to get to know each other better, it added. President Ma Ying-jeou will receive the dignitaries on Monday, and is expected to praise their efforts to preserve the indigenous cultures and identities, the CIP said.
