Exhibition of gigantic sculptures kicks off

Taipei, Nov. 6 (CNA) An exhibition featuring large Buddhist and Taoist-inspired sculptures by Taiwanese Li Chen kicked off Sunday in Taipei, giving viewers a taste of the East from a contemporary perspective. Titled "Greatness of Spirit," the exhibition showcases 22 pieces of artwork by Li over a period of 12 years, with the largest piece being close to 10 meters tall. Li, 48, is known for creating sculptures that fuse Buddhist and Taoist ideas with contemporary ideas. He gave a solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale, a major contemporary art exhibition in Venice, Italy, in 2007, and another one at the National Art Museum of China in 2008. Li's work has also been shown in New York, Chicago, Jerusalem, Paris, London and other cities. The exhibition features five collections -- Energy of Emptiness, Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether, Soul Guardians, the Beacon, and the latest Ethereal Cloud. It will run until Dec. 4 at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. (By Christie Chen)
