US skipper Read aims for 1st in Volvo Ocean Race

It can be quite a drag to spend eight months racing around the world, dodging everything from whales to icebergs to stray shipping containers, only to finish second.
That's what happened to American skipper Ken Read in the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, a result that's driving him to cross the finish line first in the blue water classic that starts Saturday from Alicante, Spain.
Read calls second place "the worst result ever."
A two-time America's Cup helmsman, Read will be at the wheel of Puma's Mar Mostro _ the sea monster _ one of six 70-foot sloops competing in the nine-leg race that covers more than 39,000 nautical miles before ending in Galway, Ireland, in July.
