Taiwan to focus more on emerging markets: minister

Taipei, Nov. 2 (CNA) Minister of Economic Affairs Shih Yen-shiang said Wednesday that Taiwan would focus more on emerging markets for exports during the current time of economic turmoil in the U.S. and Europe. As Europe struggles with a debt crisis and the U.S. deals with a slowing economy, Shih said Taiwan would expand exports to China and other emerging markets. Taiwan would, however, continue to explore potential new opportunities in the U.S. and Europe, he said. Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Brazil and Russia were a few of the countries to be focused on, Shih explained. He added that many of those countries had a huge consumer base, an annual economic growth rate of at least 7 percent and were home to a large number of Chinese-speaking residents and businesspeople. Shih said the ministry would first focus on the sale of information technology (IT) products and would then promote exports of other types of goods. The minister made the remarks after attending the award ceremony of the "IT Travelers Go!" contest, in which contestants were required to share their experiences of using Taiwanese IT products during a 21-day trip in Asia.
