French President Nicolas Sarkozy is holding an emergency meeting of top government ministers to discuss Greece's surprise decision to hold a referendum on a European bailout for its debt-ridden economy.
An official in Sarkozy's office says the president will convene his prime minister, finance minister, foreign minister and head of the central bank for the meeting in Paris on Tuesday afternoon. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of presidential policy.
Sarkozy is hosting leaders of the Group of 20 leading economies in Cannes on the French Riviera this week for a summit expected to focus on Europe's debt mess.
Sarkozy has helped lead efforts to rescue Greece. The referendum throws into question a hard-won European agreement aimed at keeping the crisis from hurting the world economy.
