Referendum approval prerequisite for peace pact with China: president

Taipei, Oct. 20 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou said Thursday the government would obtain people's approval through a referendum before pushing for a peace pact with mainland China, amid an onslaught of opposition from critics who had accused him of promoting cross-Taiwan Strait unification. Ma reiterated that he had not set any timetable for the signing of the deal. "I didn't say the peace pact must be signed within the next 10 years, although I did emphasize that this will be an unavoidable issue that Taiwan must face in the next decade," he said in a news conference.
