Cloud-based medical services available for hospitals

Show Chwan Health Care System, a private Taipei-based hospital, and telecom giant Chunghwa Telecom launched a project on Wednesday that will enable patients to access their medical records, receive treatment advice, and track medical breakthroughs via mobile devices.
Chunghwa Telecom said the combination of cloud technology and the hospital’s information system -- including patients’ medical records and nursing and health care information -- will help the hospital reduce costs and enhance its efficiency.
Nurses who make patient rounds every hour at the hospital, for example, will no longer have to carry around stacks of patient records with them but will be able to rely on a tablet PC, Show Chwan hospital staff members said.
In addition, patients can access their own medical records at home via an online database, which will empower them to monitor their own health situation, hospital staffers said.
Smartphone applications developed by the hospital will also keep patients up to date on the latest medical advancements.
Following Chunghwa Telecom’s move into cloud technology health care applications, Far Eastone Telecom Co., the third largest carrier in Taiwan, said it will launch a similar online database at participating hospitals next year.
The carrier said it was already working with five major hospitals across the island to provide diabetes patients online services.
The system allows diabetes patients at the five hospitals to upload their latest blood sugar levels anywhere through devices with Internet connections.
Hospital staff can then monitor the patients’ situation from afar and advise them on their condition as necessary.
