Asustek unveils 'Zenbook' ultra-thin laptops

Taipei, Oct. 12 (CNA) Taiwanese PC brand Asustek Computer Inc. unveiled five Ultrabooks in New York Tuesday that the company hopes will drive sales growth in the fourth quarter. The new super-thin laptops, dubbed "Zenbooks," offer panel sizes of either 11.6 inches or 13.3 inches, are 3 millimeters thick at their thinnest point, and have a 2-second resume time, according to an Asustek statement. At the product launch in New York, Asustek Chairman Jonney Shih said the latest technologies and Zenbook design combined to form "a perfect blend of elegance and power." Tom Kilroy, Intel's senior vice president and general manager of its sales and marketing group, said Asustek's Zenbook was "vivid proof that Ultrabooks are ushering in a fundamental transformation of personal computing." The Zenbooks will be available for order in North America starting on Oct. 12, with prices ranging from US$999 (NT$30,440) to US$1,449. Asustek reported on Tuesday that it had non-consolidated sales of NT$31.23 billion (US$1.02 billion) in September, an increase of 12.64 percent year-on-year. Analysts believe that the company's consolidated revenue in the third quarter hit a historical high of NT$100 billion. The company's sales are expected to remain strong in the fourth quarter, driven by the launch of new Ultrabooks and a second-generation Eee Pad Transformer tablet, Asustek's chief financial officer David Chang was cited by the Chinese-language Apple Daily as saying.
