Guyana president lifts ban on opposition station

The president of Guyana has temporarily lifted a ban on an opposition television station so it can cover next month's elections in the South American country.
President Bharrat Jagdeo says the government will allow CNSTV-6 to broadcast because he does not want it to appear that he is giving his People's Progressive Party an advantage in the Nov. 28 election.
He said at a rally late Sunday that the station must again go off the air on Dec. 1 to fulfill the remainder of its four-month suspension.
The government has drawn criticism for suspending the station because commentators made allegedly false and defamatory statements about a friend of the president.
