Man arrested in Romania over Hardy's killing

A Romanian court on Monday ordered the detention of a man over the killing of American basketball player Chauncey Hardy.
Ionut Adrian Tanasoaia will be in custody for 29 days pending trial. He surrendered to police early Monday. Tanasoaia is accused of beating up Hardy in a bar in the southern Romanian city of Giurgiu on Saturday night.
Hardy, who arrived in Romania in August, died shortly after undergoing surgery in a Bucharest hospital on Sunday. The 23-year-old player had sustained severe head injuries and was in a coma when he was admitted to the hospital in the southern town of Giurgiu where he played for CSS Giurgiu.
Prosecutors said Monday that Hardy was punched after he playfully put his cap on a woman's head. The woman's boyfriend objected to the gesture and Hardy tried to show that he didn't understand Romanian. Tanasoaia, who was also in the bar, then allegedly punched Hardy on the chin, and the American fell to the ground.
A preliminary autopsy revealed he had a massive hemorrhage and a broken skull.
Giurgiu county hospital spokeswoman Elisabeta Bene confirmed Monday that doctors initially suspected Hardy was in a coma because he had been drinking. She said a few hours later his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a hospital in Bucharest 60 kilometers (38 miles) north of Giurgiu, where he died.
"We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased," said a statement from the public diplomacy department of the U.S. Embassy sent to The Associated Press.
"We are concerned by the violent circumstances surrounding the death of this U.S. citizen, and will pay close attention as the investigation progresses."
Romania's health ministry on Monday ordered an inquiry to determine whether emergency procedures had been followed.
Hardy played college basketball at Sacred Heart in Connecticut from 2006 to 2010.
