Chimei Innolux remains top panel supplier to Chinese TV makers

Taipei, Oct. 7 (CNA) Chimei Innolux Corp., one of Taiwan's leading flat panel makers, remained the largest supplier to the six major Chinese TV brands in August, taking a 35 percent market share, according to a research report. According to the report released by WitsView, a Taipei-based market information advisory, it was the fourth consecutive month the company had ranked as the top TV panel supplier to the six Chinese brands. The six Chinese TV makers are Changhong, Haier, Hisense, Konka, Skyworth and TCL, which accounted for about 75 percent of the mainland market in 2010. WitsView said that trailing Chimei Innolux, LG Display of South Korea held a 21 percent market share and ranked the second-largest supplier, while Taiwan's AU Optronices Corp. and South Korea's Samsung Electronics tied for third place with a 19 percent share each. In the first eight months of this year, Chimei Innolux took a 31 percent share to rank as the largest supplier to the six Chinese TV brands, followed by LG with 27 percent and Samsung Electronics and AUO with 18 percent each, the report said. The report said Changhong and Haier largely bought flat panels from AUO and Chimei Innolux, while Hisense, Konka and Skyworth depended on their supplies from Chimei Innolux and LG. In addition, Samsung Electronics and AUO served as the main suppliers to TCL, the report added. Witsview said Hisense ranked as the largest TV supplier in the China market in August with shipments up 67 percent from July, while Skyworth took second spot with shipments up 6 percent from a month earlier and TCL grasped third position with shipments down 7 percent. Chonghong, Konka and Haier were the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-biggest TV suppliers in China in August, the advisory firm said. Witsview said that while demand for TV screens in China remains stronger than in the U.S. and European markets, shipments to the mainland are unlikely to reverse the current falling panel prices, the result of a global supply glut. On the Taiwan Stock Exchange, AUO closed up 0.82 percent at NT$12.30 (US$0.40) Friday and Chimei Innolux ended up 0.40 percent at NT$12.60. (By Pan Chi-I and Frances Huang)
