US welcomes Myanmar decision to halt dam

The U.S. has welcomed as significant and positive Myanmar's decision to halt work on a major hydroelectric dam project in the country's north.
President Thein Sein announced Friday that the Chinese-backed Myitsone dam in Kachin State was suspended because "it is against the will of the people." It was startling turnaround welcomed by democracy activists and environmentalists.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland encouraged Myanmar's government to continue taking steps to respect and consider the interests of all of its people, including ethnic minorities, the democratic opposition and civil society.
She said: "We hope that this kind of positive progress can continue."
Myanmar's foreign minister was received Thursday at the State Department.
