Teachers to strike in Madrid over staff cuts

Teachers in Madrid are going on strike next week to protest staff cuts blamed on the need for austerity.
A teachers union leader, Eduardo Sabina, said Tuesday secondary school and vocational training teachers will go on strike Sept. 20 and 21.
Last week unions had said the strike would be Wednesday, Sept. 14, the first day of school.
But Sabina said teachers decided at a marathon meeting Monday night to change the date because not all teachers in metropolitan Madrid's 400 secondary schools were expected to be on duty the first day of school.
The immediate trigger of the protest is a regional government order that teachers give two extra hours of class per week because fewer teachers with temporary contracts are being hired this year.
