AFL assistant coach banned for gambling

The Australian Football League has suspended Essendon Bombers assistant coach Dean Wallis for 14 matches for placing bets on Australian Rules matches.
Wallis, who was also fined $7,500, placed one bet of $200 and two each of $100. The AFL said Thursday that one of the wagers was successful.
AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said Wallis had initially been "untruthful" about his involvement, and that the ban would have been less if he had initially been more "up front" with league investigators.
Collingwood player Heath Shaw recently completed an eight-game suspension for betting on the first goalkicker in a Collingwood game.
