Mayor: NYPD can balance security, civil liberties

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the New York Police Department is capable of balancing security issues with civil liberties as it works to deal with any potential terror threat to the city.
An investigation by The Associated Press recently found that the NYPD dispatched undercover officers into ethnic communities to monitor daily life and scrutinized mosques and Muslim student groups. Critics have called for an investigation, saying it amounts to racial profiling.
Bloomberg didn't comment directly on the investigation. But he told the AP in an interview Wednesday that the NYPD can pursue threats of terrorism in minority communities without unfairly targeting any particular group.
He also says the city's Muslims are supportive of a police presence.
