House vote could move stalled trade agenda

A House of Representatives vote Wednesday to extend an expired trade program for the world's poorer countries lays the groundwork for what could be more politically important consideration of free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama.
On a voice vote, the House agreed to renew the Generalized System of Preferences, a 35-year-old program that allows duty-free entry for some 4,800 products from about 130 developing countries.
The bill now goes to the Senate, which is expected to combine it with legislation to renew a program to help workers displaced by foreign competition.
President Barack Obama says passage of the worker aid bill must be assured before he submits to Congress the three free trade agreements that were concluded during the George W. Bush presidency.
