US, EU pledge cooperation to limit illegal fishing

The United States and the European Union are pledging greater cooperation to crack down on illegal fishing.
The agreement signed by US and EU officials in Washington Wednesday establishes a new system for exchanging information on illegal and unregulated fishing. Both sides also pledged to step up monitoring and enforcement.
The European Union is the world's biggest seafood importer and the United States ranks third after Japan.
A recent United Nations report found that illegal fishing hauls bring in an estimated $10 billion to $23.5 billion annually.
It said that 32 percent of world fish stocks are estimated to be overexploited, depleted or recovering and need to be urgently rebuilt.
