France: Syria crackdown is crime against humanity

France's foreign minister says Syria's deadly crackdown on protesters amounts to a crime against humanity.
Alain Juppe also called on Russia on Wednesday to back sanctions against Syria at the United Nations.
But after talks with Russia's foreign and defense ministers, Juppe said that Moscow continues to disagree with France on the approach toward Syria.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on Syria's opposition to engage in a dialogue with the authorities.
The U.N. says 2,200 people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March, inspired by the revolutions sweeping the Arab world. But nearly six months later, the unrest in Syria has descended into a bloody stalemate with neither side willing to back down.
