French envoy ousted after comment on Palestine

A French envoy to the Middle East says she lost her job after publicly arguing against a U.N. vote to recognize a Palestinian state.
Valerie Hoffenberg, France's envoy for economic aspects to the Mideast peace process, said Wednesday the news of her removal was "a surprise."
She told The Associated Press that she thinks the decision was "linked" to a statement she made in Israel last week. At the time, she said that she is "opposed to a unilateral declaration" of a Palestinian state.
French Foreign Ministry spokesman Romain Nadal said Hoffenberg "had to give up her official mission" because she is starting to campaign for legislative elections.
France has not said publicly whether it will support a vote on Palestinian statehood at the U.N. General Assembly later this month.
