Nations focus on al-Qaida Sahara terrorism

Foreign ministers of Algeria and neighboring countries are searching for the means to confront terrorism in North Africa and the Sahara.
The two day anti-terrorism conference beginning Wednesday will feature high level delegations from France and the U.S., including head of the U.S. African command, Gen. Carter Ham.
Algeria has expressed concern over what it says is a flood of arms coming from neighboring Libya and falling into the hands of terrorist groups based in the desert.
Al-Qaida in the Maghreb, an affiliate of the international terrorism organization, has been active in kidnapping foreigners in the remote reaches of the Sahara as well as carrying out attacks in Algeria.
The conference includes the top diplomats of Mali, Niger and Mauritania.
