Malawi: Opposition leads in crucial by-election

Preliminary results show a pro-democracy campaigner is trumping the ruling party candidate in a critical by-election that signals increasing opposition to President Bingu wa Mutharika's seven-year rule of Malawi.
Electoral officials in northern Rumphi district early Wednesday counted 6,641 votes for Enoch Chihana against 3,275 for the ruling party candidate. Two other candidates won fewer votes. Official results are expected later in the day.
Mutharika has twice been democratically elected but has reacted to opposition with growing authoritarianism. He is the sole authority in the southern African nation since he fired his Cabinet after July protests turned violent and left 19 people dead. International donors have frozen hundreds of millions of dollars in aid.
