England on brink of Euro 2012 after beating Wales

England is on the brink of qualifying for the European Championship after a drab 1-0 victory over Wales on Tuesday ended a yearlong wait for a win at Wembley Stadium.
Ashley Young scored from Stewart Downing's cross in the 35th minute to put England six points clear at the top of Group G.
But Robert Earnshaw squandered a golden chance to equalize in the 77th, missing an open net from six meters (yards).
While the Welsh are bottom of Group G and 117th in the FIFA rankings, they did not capitulate against the world's fourth-best team, which had failed to win its last four home matches.
England will secure a spot at Euro 2012 with at least a draw at second-place Montenegro in its last qualifier on Oct. 7.
