Special US envoy to make 1st trip to Myanmar

The new U.S. special envoy to Myanmar is making his first trip to the military-dominated country since his appointment last month and will hold talks with government officials.
Derek Mitchell also will meet members of political parties and local civil society organizations. He will go to the capital Naypyidaw on Friday, then continue consulations in Myanmar's main city Yangon.
A State Department statement said Mitchell's trip "is intended to build upon U.S. dialogue and engagement toward shared goals of genuine reform, reconciliation, and development for the Burmese people."
After visiting Myanmar, Mitchell will consult with officials in Thailand and Indonesia.
The envoy is seeking a regional consensus on encouraging democracy and improved human rights in Myanmar.
