Top French Socialists vie in primary for 2012 vote

Socialist politicians, each hoping to be the one to try to defeat President Nicolas Sarkozy in next year's presidential elections, have officially put their names in the ring for the party's October primary election.
But the one thought to have the best chance, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, is missing.
Polls show that two out of the five candidates that have put their names forward _ party leader Martine Aubry and former party chief Francois Hollande _ can potentially defeat Sarkozy in Strauss-Kahn's absence. Candidates have to apply before the end of day Wednesday.
Strauss-Kahn's consistently high popularity rating made him the obvious Socialist candidate. However, his May 14 arrest on sexual assault charges in New York, where he remains without a passport, has derailed Socialists' plans.
