German railway sees big rise in metal theft

Germany's national railway says it is stepping up efforts to deter metal thieves following a big increase in thefts.
Deutsche Bahn AG said Tuesday there were 2,500 thefts last year, up from 1,900 in 2009.
It said the biggest rises were in the east _ because of its closeness to eastern Europe, where some metal ends up, and because the routes are less busy.
The company says it is putting more security in place, and using methods such as marking cables in a way that's invisible to thieves to deter theft and track stolen items.
Stealing metal from overhead electric lines and other railway facilities is lucrative but potentially dangerous.
Deutsche Bahn says 8,000 trains were disrupted because of metal thefts last year, costing around (EURO)10 million ($14 million).
