Jordan shopkeepers say threats thwarted protest

The head of Jordan's tenant protection association says government officials threatened to punish shopkeepers to prevent them from protesting over housing issues.
Mohammad al-Hanafi says tax officials visited shopkeepers and threatened to raise their taxes if they went ahead with a demonstration planned for Tuesday against a draft law that would hike shop rents. The protest did not go ahead.
Five shopkeepers contacted by the Associated Press all said they had not received threats. A government spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.
