Rebel group for cease-fire in India's northeast

A leading separatist group in India's restive northeast announces a unilateral cease-fire and moves closer to a peace dialogue with New Delhi.
The United Liberation Front of Asom has been fighting since 1979 for an independent homeland in the state of Assam. The insurgency has claimed an estimated 10,000 lives.
The militant group offered an indefinite cease-fire Tuesday and asked its members to eschew violence and end their rebellion.
New Delhi has offered talks previously but said ULFA would have to give up violence. Officials did not immediately react to Tuesday's statement.
