China's premier orders boost to pork supplies

China's premier has ordered local leaders to boost pork production to help hold down food costs that soared 14.4 percent in June.
The government newspaper China Daily said Tuesday that Premier Wen Jiabao issued the order during a weekend visit to China's north. It said Wen called holding down prices of pork, the country's staple meat, the government's "unavoidable responsibility."
Pork prices jumped 57 percent in June. The China Daily said Wen told local leaders to take steps to hold down production costs and increase supplies but gave no details.
Analysts blame the inflation spike on rising demand that is outstripping food supplies and a flood of bank lending that was part of China's stimulus after the 2008 global crisis.
