Judge lets weapons case proceed to trial in NYC

A New York judge has rejected an ex-Soviet officer's attempt to dismiss the weapons-dealing case against him on the grounds that he has no connection to the United States and that U.S. conduct was outrageous.
Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin in Manhattan said Monday that the law only requires that Viktor Bout acknowledge that he knew the crimes he was accused of would harm the United States.
Bout was brought to the United States last year from Thailand to face charges that he conspired to sell weapons to a terrorist group. Prosecutors say they have audio tapes of Bout discussing the arms deals.
Bout is scheduled for trial in October. He was arrested in a Bangkok hotel in March 2008. He has pleaded not guilty.
