Dominican workers launch 1-day general strike

Numerous businesses are closed and transportation is hobbled as Dominican workers are staging a one-day general strike to push for wage increases and to protest tax hikes and rising inflation.
Storefronts are shuttered in many poor neighborhoods of the capital of Santo Domingo. Pushcarts are covered with tarps along the streets. Government offices, shops and banks in wealthier districts remain open.
Taxi and truck drivers, teachers, and other workers participated in the strike organized by the Alternative Social Forum, a coalition of labor unions.
The strike's economic impact was not immediately known.
The Caribbean country's major tourist zones were not affected by the strike.
