9 dead, 4 injured in car crash in Greece

A car carrying suspected illegal immigrants careened off a highway in northern Greece on Monday, killing nine passengers and injuring four, police said.
Authorities said the overcrowded car had been modified to squeeze the 13 people into it. One of the injured men was identified as an Iraqi national.
The nationalities of the other casualties was not known. Police said the car had Serbian license plates that had been reported stolen earlier this month in northern Greece.
A passer-by saw the wreckage near the northern town of Komotini, 815 kilometers (505 miles) northeast of Athens, early Monday morning and called authorities.
Greece is a main gateway into the European Union for illegal immigrants.
