Indonesia intercepts Sri Lankan asylum seekers

Indonesia's maritime police say they have intercepted a ship heading to New Zealand with 85 Sri Lankan asylum seekers aboard.
Colonel Yasin Kosasih said Monday that the asylum seekers refused to leave the boat when it reached port in Tanjung Pinang, the capital of Kepulauan Riau province. Those aboard told authorities they were determined to get to New Zealand.
Indonesia has become a major transit point for people from Afghanistan, Iraq and other wartorn countries trying to illegally enter New Zealand and Australia.
In the last two years, more than 250 Sri Lankan asylum seekers have been among them. Most are ethnic Tamils.
