Turkish prosecutor asks for life sentences

A prosecutor has requested life sentences for five suspects, including a rear admiral, on charges they attempted to overthrow Parliament in an alleged coup plot in 2003.
The Anatolia news agency said Wednesday that prosecutor Huseyin Aksoy made that request regarding Rear Adm. Kadir Sagdic, Navy Col. Ali Turksen and three other suspects after examining sacks of classified documents that were discovered by police at a navy base in Golcuk, near Istanbul, last year.
Turkish media say the documents are linked to the alleged coup plot known as "Sledgehammer."
The five suspects have been formally charged but not tried yet.
More than 160 retired and active military officers have been jailed in the case on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the country's Islamic-rooted government.
The military, which staged coups in the past, denies the allegations.
