Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton are calling for the release of political prisoners in Belarus.
Speaking after the two officials met in Washington, Clinton said they were both concerned about the crackdown following December's presidential election. The election was widely criticized by observers.
Clinton called the arrest of opponents and dissidents politically motivated.
She said the United States and the EU want the "immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners."
