Surprise dip in UK unemployment rate to 7.7 pct

Official data shows Britain's unemployment rate dipped slightly to 7.7 percent in the first three months of the year. But officials say the number of people claiming unemployment benefits rose in April and the number of female claimants reached the highest level since October 1996.
The Office for National Statistics says the total claimant count rose by 12,400 since March to 1.47 million. The number of women rose by 9,300 to 474,400, the 10th consecutive monthly rise.
The statistics agency says the increase in women claiming benefits was due in part to a change in benefit rules.
The decrease in the unemployment rate surprised market analysts who were expecting no change from the 7.8 percent rate reported a month ago.
