Senior US diplomat in Myanmar to meet new gov't

A senior U.S. diplomat is in Myanmar for a get-acquainted visit with the new nominally civilian government.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Joseph Y. Yun will also meet de facto opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi during his visit.
State Department spokesman Mark Toner said earlier that Yun will also meet with representatives of political parties and ethnic minorities and businessmen.
Myanmar, under military rule since 1962, held its first elections in 20 years in November, and a new government took power in March.
Critics charge that army rule continues in a disguised form.
The U.S. had shunned the junta for its undemocratic rule, but has recently been seeking ways to engage with the government to promote change.
