Taiwan holds air raid drill as China ties improve

Taiwan has begun its annual air raid drill, despite warming ties with China, the exercise's designated adversary.
The Wan-an or "safety for everyone" exercise is an island-wide drill premised on widespread Chinese air attacks.
On Wednesday afternoon a siren sounded and vehicles and pedestrians in Taipei stopped in their tracks, shops closed their doors and lights were extinguished.
The exercise will be repeated elsewhere in Taiwan later this month and in early June.
Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing still claims the island as its own and vows to retake it, by force if necessary.
But Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has significantly improved relations with the mainland in the last three years, amid closer economic ties.
