Croat generals appeal war crimes convictions

Croat generals appeal war crimes convictions

Two Croatian generals say their convictions by a UN war crimes tribunal for crimes including murdering and deporting Serbs during a 1995 military campaign were miscarriages of justice and should be overturned.
Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac have filed appeals against their convictions a month ago by the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal.
The court found Gotovina and Markac guilty of murder, expulsion, plunder and other crimes against humanity, and sentenced them to 24 and 18 years respectively. A third general, Ivan Cermak, was acquitted.
All three were charged for their roles in "Operation Storm," a Croat offensive that drove thousands of Serbs out of the Krajina border region.
The appeals were released by the court Tuesday.
