Taiwan drill simulates nuclear plant disaster

Taiwan has held a preparedness drill simulating a Japanese-type disaster in a nuclear power plant in the northern part of the island.
In Tuesday's exercise, fire trucks pumped water to put out flames outside the area storing the plant's two reactors, while workers evacuated nearby residents from simulated radiation emissions .
Japan's earthquake- and tsunami-triggered disaster in March has stirred up grave public concern about the safety of Taiwan's three operating nuclear plants. Two are located only 12 miles (20 kilometers) from metropolitan Taipei.
Overseeing the drill, President Ma Ying-jeou rebuffed opposition calls to shut down Taiwan's nuclear power plants, but promised to use "the highest standards to maintain nuclear safety."
