Brazil court keeps Italian fugitive in jail

Brazil's top court says an Italian fugitive must remain in jail until it makes a final decision on his extradition case.
Lawyers for former leftist rebel Cesare Battisti asked the court to free him. Justice Gilmar Mendes ruled Monday that Battisti will remain in jail until the full court rules on his case.
Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva rejected Italy's extradition request on Dec. 31.
Brazil's top court will now examine the legality of da Silva's decision. That ruling is expected before the end of June.
Battisti was convicted in absentia of four political murders from the 1970s. Arrested in Brazil in 2007, Battisti says he is innocent.
