Canada's Alex Tagliani has posted the fastest lap this month at Indianapolis, going 225.878 mph (363.515 kph)in the final hour of Monday's practice.
New Zealand's Scott Dixon, the 2008 Indy 500 winner, was second at 225.124 mph. Graham Rahal, son of 1986 race winner Bobby Rahal, was next at 225.071. Rahal and Dixon both drive for Chip Ganassi.
Australian Ryan Briscoe, of Team Penske, was fourth at 225.016 and Spaniard Oriol Servia rounded out the top five at 224.903.
Defending champ Dario Franchitti of Scotland, another Ganassi driver, was seventh at 224.406. Three-time Indy winner Helio Castroneves, Briscoe's teammate and a Brazilian, was eighth at 224.348.
Practice is scheduled to resume Tuesday at noon. The race is May 29.
