Nicaraguan named chair of UN indigenous forum

Mirna Cunningham has assumed leadership of the U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
Cunningham is a Miskito Indian who was governor for Nicaragua's Atlantic region. She took over as chairwoman as the annual two-week session opened Monday.
The forum aims to advance the rights of the world's 370 million indigenous people. More than 1,300 delegates are reviewing issues from economic development to the environment.
Cunningham is former General Secretary of the Inter-American Indigenous Institute.
She has a masters degree in public health and received an honorary doctorate from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 2009.
The Miskitos are indigenous people living along the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua and Honduras.
