Nigeria to get $60M to eradicate polio disease

Nigeria will receive $60 million to eradicate polio.
A National Primary Health Care Development Agency officer said in a statement Monday that the World Bank gave Nigeria the credit, after it wrote off a $131 million loan used to combat polio between 2003 and 2010.
Tashikalmah Hallah said the goal is to eradicate the disease this year, after recording a 95 percent drop in cases between 2009 and 2010.
Polio is largely unknown in most of the world, but vaccines to protect children from paralysis and death have been met with resistance in Nigeria's impoverished north.
In 2003, imams led a boycott of vaccinations, saying they were a Western plot to make Muslims infertile or infect them with AIDS, but authorities have since worked with partners to gain their support.
