Stocks are starting the new week with losses following an earnings miss by a big retailer and new concerns about Europe's debt crisis.
Home improvement company Lowe's fell 3 percent in early trading Monday after its quarterly report missed Wall Street's estimates and the company cut its outlook for the year.
European financial markets are reacting to the arrest of the head of the IMF over the weekend for an alleged sexual assault in New York. The official, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, had been heavily involved in trying to solve the debt crises in Portugal and Greece. European stocks are falling broadly.
The Dow is down 51 points, or 0.4 percent, to 12,544 in morning trading. The S&P 500 is down 6, or 0.4 percent, to 1,332. The Nasdaq is down 16, or 0.6 percent, to 2,813.
