A military official in Somalia says an explosion at a base in Mogadishu has killed five pro-government troops.
Abdi Muhummad, a commander with a government-allied force, said a land mine exploded Monday at the pro-government military base.
Muhummad said he believes militants from al-Shabab, the country's most dangerous insurgent group, buried the explosive before fleeing the base last week.
Maj. Paddy Ankunda, a spokesman for African Union troops in Somalia, said his forces began an operation last Thursday that has succeeded in gaining 500 yards (meters) of territory from insurgents. Three AU troops have died so far in the operation, in addition to Monday's five deaths.
