Italians are voting in a second day for mayors across the country, with Premier Silvio Berlusconi hoping the results will reverse his sagging popularity.
Ballot counting begins after polls close Monday afternoon.
The key race is Milan, a power base for both the premier and his coalition ally, Northern League leader Umberto Bossi. Milan is also where Berlusconi is being prosecuted in four criminal cases. In one trial, he is defending himself against charges he paid for sex with an underage prostitute and then used his position to try to cover it up.
Berlusconi campaigned hard for re-election for Milan Mayor Letizia Moratti.
Also important is Naples, where Berlusconi had bragged he had solved that city's chronic garbage problem but tons of trash have returned to the streets.
