Van der Westhuizen diagnosed with muscle disease

The publicist for Joost van der Westhuizen says the former Springboks captain and 1995 World Cup winner has been diagnosed with a motor-neuron muscle disease.
Bridget van Oerle says in a statement on Thursday that former South Africa scrumhalf Van der Westhuizen has "a serious muscle related neural disease" and has begun immediate treatment.
Van Oerle says the 40-year-old Van der Westhuizen, who is South Africa's joint-leading tryscorer in tests, was diagnosed by his doctor after experiencing problems with his right arm.
Van Oerle says "the symptoms are serious and vary from person to person."
Van der Westhuizen played 89 tests for South Africa from 1993 to 2003, scoring 38 tries. He shares the tries record with current wing Bryan Habana.
