Spain: Catalans ponder independence in Barcelona

Pro-independence activists are asking citizens of Spain's second largest city in an informal, nonbinding referendum whether the northeastern region of Catalonia should seek to break away and become a wholly autonomous nation.
Barcelona _ the capital of Catalonia _ follows in the footsteps of 167 towns and villages that held a similar unofficial vote in 2009 which gave the idea of independence lukewarm approval.
On a sunny spring day, the Catalan pro-independence groups behind the referendum hope to improve Sunday on the meager 25 percent turnout of the rural ballot, where 94 percent of voters favored independence.
Maria Garcia, a 79-year old retiree, said she voted yes to independence to allow Catalans greater control of their own finances.
