Omani police fire tear gas on protesters

Witnesses say Omani police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse hundreds of protesters demanding the release of people detained in crackdowns by security forces.
The witnesses say the clashes broke out after Friday prayers in Sohar, an industrial city in northern Oman where pro-reform demonstrations began in late February against the tight political controls in the strategic Arabian peninsula nation.
The latest protests are calling for the release of detainees held after a flare-up of unrest earlier this week. The witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity because of fear of drawing the attention of authorities.
Oman and Iran share control of the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf, the route for 40 percent of the world's oil tanker traffic.
